We offer a bespoke experience, providing you and your pet with first-class care in a calm and relaxing environment.
It is important to us that your pet is adequately protected against possible parasites, which in this country include: fleas, ticks, lice, mites, lung worm, heart worm, round worm and tape worm. The level of protection they need will depend on their age and lifestyle.
Your pet will have a personalised program designed by your vet to ensure they are only taking what they need. With the current research into environmental and resistance considerations with parasite treatment, this makes it all the more important you discuss your pets routine with your vet before deciding on treatment.
Will it be a tablet or a drop on?
We can provide either for your pet, depending on what you find easier to administer.
Can you help me administer the product as my pet hates it?
Hopefully we should be abe to provide a product that is easy for you to do at home. If your pet is proving a very tricky customer, feel free to book an appointment with one of our Veterinary Nurses, who will be more than happy to help.
We can implant microchips and register your details.
For dogs, it is the law that they are microchipped before 8 weeks old and the first registered owner should be the breeder. They provide details for you to change the registration to you as the new owner when you collect your new puppy. It is still compulsory for your dog to wear an identification tag with your name and address on it. Failing to comply with these laws can lead to a £500 fine.
For cats, it will become law to microchip before 20 weeks of age on 24th June 2024. This is currently usually done when your kitten comes in to be neutered, so they can be asleep whilst the chip is implanted.
How much does a microchip cost?
Microchipping costs £20. If you are microchipping a litter or puppies or kittens please speak to us about our litter packages.
Do you keep the registered microchip details?
No. It is the owners responsibility to ensure the correct details are up to date on the microchip database. The information for how to update them comes with your registration pack emailed to you after your chip is implanted.
Weight management clinics are run by our Registered Veterinary Nurses, and can help you if you are worried your pet is over or under weight.
These clinics aim to provide judgement-free advice to help you manage your pet’s weight to keep them as healthy as possible. We sadly see many pets suffering with their weight, leading to other health problems such as joint disease, heart disease or painful skin conditions. Our nurses are trained in nutrition and have a wealth of experience to be able to help you – even with the hungriest of hounds or the fussiest of felines.
As part of the clinic, we will discuss your pets lifestyle any medical conditions and what feeding schedule fits with your day, then you will be given a plan to follow to help meet your pets goals.
How much does a weight clinic cost?
They can be purchased as a full program for £60, or individually for £24.
How long does an appointment take?
The first appointment is 30 minutes, and follow ups are usually 15 minutes.
Socialisation Visits
Coming to the vets can be daunting (for both you and your pet). If you have visited us before, you will know how much work has gone into designing our clinic with relaxation in mind. It is very important to us that you and your furry friend can come to the vets without feeling flustered, anxious, or rushed – we understand it can be a worrying time.
Sadly, despite our best intentions to help our pets, they sometimes don’t understand why funny things happen to them at the vets, for example check-ups or vaccinations. Understandably, they can become more and more suspicious as times go on. This is why we feel our familiarisation visits are so important. They allow your pet to come to the vets for fuss only, and no medical procedures. This builds up trust between us and them, so when they do need some extra veterinary attention, they realise we aren’t all bad! It also gives us time to get to know you too (grab a coffee from the waiting room on the way in – we always love to chat).
Are familiarisation visits charged for?
Socialisation visits are available as a bundle of 5 for £30. We’ve kept the cost low to make regular positive visits easy and accessible, helping your pet feel relaxed and happy every time they come to see us.
How long do they take?
Usually 20 minutes with the nurse, but you may wish to spend a little longer sitting in reception to get them used to this too (our client care team also like a chance to give them some fuss and a treat or two).
Nail trimming can play an important part in keeping our pets comfortable, especially as they age. It can also be very stressful for some pets to have done. Our vets and nurses will always be able to give advice on how best to teach your pet to have their nails trimmed, if they require it (not all animals do).
Please always let us know if you think your pet might need a nail trim added to their appointment, so we can allocate enough time.
How much does nail trimming cost?
£30 or it is included in the Kingsclere Vets Members’ Club.
Will my animal need sedation if they won’t sit still?
Some animals do need sedation to have their nails trimmed, as it is important we don’t cause them too much stress. In other case, it is possible to prescribe tablets to give before your appointment, which can help your pet to relax. Speak to your vet or nurse if you think your pet might need something to calm them before their appointment.
Dogs, and sometimes cats, might need their anal glands expressing if they show signs of irritation. These usually include rubbing their bottom on the floor, chewing their legs/thighs/rear end, or stopping suddenly and sitting down.
Our nurses are trained to empty anal glands, so please book a consultation if you are concerned, or it can be added to an appointment with the vet if you are already in for other issues. Please let us know beforehand so we can allocate enough time.
Do all dogs need their anal glands expressed routinely?
No, it is normal for some material to build and naturally empty in all dogs. They only need them emptied if they are showing signs of irritation.
Our dedicated imaging suite has digital radiography which produces instant images on the screen for our team to interpret without the need to develop a cassette, meaning we can reduce anaesthetic time for our patients.
It is also equipped with a sophisticated ultrasound machine, where we can carry out abdominal and thoracic ultrasound in house.
The suite has dimmable lighting and soft fluffy blankets, to make the experience as comfortable for your pet as possible.
We have advanced, accurate, in-house laboratory machines to bring us rapid blood and urine test results which we can quickly use as part of treatment plans. We can also offer culture and sensitivity testing, which helps our vets decide on antibiotic therapy that will treat your pet’s infection.
We have two theatres at Kingsclere Vets, fitted with the most up-to-date anaesthetic monitoring to look after your pets whilst they sleep. Here we can perform routine surgeries such as neutering and lump removals, to more complex emergency procedures.
If your pet needs to stay overnight for monitoring or treatment, you can rest assured we have considered every detail to keep them happy and comfortable.
From separate dog and cat wards, dimmable lighting, orthopaedic mattresses and fluffy blankets, we have thought of everything to give your pet a home away from home. Our caring and dedicated patient care assistants and nursing staff are always on hand to check, walk and feed your beloved family member, which makes them being away that little bit easier.
